SMITH SEEKING ASSISTANCE FOR SEARS EMPLOYEES
10/12/2017 5:27:05 AM

Sears Canada is seeking approval to liquidate its roughly 130 remaining stores, including the one in Belleville. Sears has been a key part of the Quinte community, whether it's giving a teen their first job or having a lifetime career that provides food on the table for families. Prince-Edward Hastings MPP Todd Smith says his heart goes out to everyone who has been affected.

Smith says he has written to Ontario's Minister of Economic Development Brad Duguid to make sure that there is assistance in-place to help with re-training and job search for Sears employees who will now be looking for work. The court that oversees Sears Canada's operations will hear a motion tomorrow for the approval of the liquidation, after the retailer failed to find a buyer. Liquidation sales would likely start next Thursday and last about 10 to 14 weeks.
