Canine Influenza is now in Northumberland County, with six confirmed cases. This is a new virus to Canada and therefore Canadian dogs haven't been exposed or immunity to the virus. It should be known that Canine Influenza is highly contagious. It is spread by direct contact with infected dogs, coughing or sneezing and indirect contact from contaiminated contact with someone or their clothing. Dr. Brett Steel of Midtown Animal Hospital in Cobourg, where a vaccination will be available this week.

    The main symptoms include coughing, sneezing, runny nose and eyes, reduced appetite and fever. You should contact your vet at the first signs if you suspect your dog has influenza. You should also keep your pet away from others that you suspect may have it. A vaccination should be considered for area dogs depending on their risk of exposure, such as those that frequent dog parks, kennals, grooming facilities or visit with other dogs often. The vaccination comes in two parts that are spread two to four weeks apart.
