POLICE SAY 401 FIRES NEAR PH 'DELIBERATELY SET'
7/11/2018 7:58:01 AM

The fires along Eastbound 401 yesterday in Port Hope are believed to be deliberately set.

Northumberland OPP and Port Hope, Cobourg and Hamilton Township fire departments responded to multiple grass fires along Highway 401 in Port Hope on Monday.

The grass fires were believed to be deliberately set along the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 west of East Townline Road through to the Toronto Road exit. Constable Kimberly Johnston, Media Relations Officer for the Northumberland OPP tells us more.

Two OPP aircraft units assisted to possibly locate a suspect vehicle. Fire crews extinguished the fires in a timely manner preventing them from spreading which could have led to highway closures.

According to Environment Canada says the lack of rain makes a situation like this even more scary. MBC asked investigators if they think there is a link between these fires and fires about a week and a half ago north of the 401 in the Joyceville area, where there was a similar situation in the afternoon there with several fires erupting in a straight line along or near the highway. Northumberland OPP said they were going to look into this. Northumberland OPP is asking for the public's assistance with this ongoing investigation and asks that anyone with information on this or other crimes call their nearest OPP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
