What started as a way to make the most out of unopened toiletries after hotel stays has turned into an initiative that makes a big difference in our community.
Rose Wilton says she was collecting toiletries after meeting up with her long-distance boyfriend at hotels in between where they both lived.
She says the ice storm of 2013 is when things changed for her, because she was unable to shower for five days.
Wilton says not being able to shower after work each day nearly drove her crazy, and her mind then when to people who do not have access to toiletries or water to brush their teeth or freshen up each day.
From there, she started making kits to hand out with travel sized soaps and shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste and hand them out in Toronto when she saw a person in need in the community.
Wilton says as she became more involved in the Port Hope community, she was shocked to realize how big of a need there was for something like this to operate in Northumberland to help people in need
From there, The Rose Quest came to life with people offering up donations to help create kits, and now, there’s a Personal Care Community Cupboard set up beside Town Hall in Port Hope.
