Canada’s chief public health officer is urging people not to get together in large groups for Easter, especially as the COVID-19 Variant of Concern is on the rise.
Our Local Acting Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Dr. Ian Gemmill, touches on the numbers for the region and how Northumberland County’s numbers are highest out of the three regions covered under the HKPR District Health Unit.
Dr. Gemmill adds that he expects all cases to soon be the Variant of Concern.
He adds that we can’t let our guard down.
During a virtual news conference in Ottawa Friday (Mar 19), Dr. Theresa Tam was asked whether spring holiday gatherings are advisable for Canadians who have been vaccinated. She said that vaccines will eventually help, but that Easter is too soon.
Tam added that fewer than 10 percent of Canadians have received even their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The White House also confirmed on Friday that the U.S. will send millions of doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Canada and Mexico.
