Number one.
That’s where the Trenton Golden Hawks reside — not only within the Ontario Junior Hockey League, but also within the Canadian Junior Hockey League.
The Golden Hawks are in the top spot in the current CJHL weekly rankings after a blistering 7-0 start to the OJHL regular season. They are one of two unbeaten teams in the league, with the Georgetown Raiders — the current number-two team in the national rankings — off to a 6-0 start.
For Trenton Golden Hawks’ head coach Peter Goulet, the number-one ranking is a ‘great honour’ in the early going of the season. But, he cautions the hard work needs to continue in order to stay on top.
“It’s a great honour for ownership, for all the staff, for all the hard work we put into this the last couple of years. It’s rewarding at the end of the day,” said Goulet.
The Golden Hawks (first, East Division standings) remained unbeaten at 7-0 after a pair of road victories last week, including a 7-4 win in Wellington against the rival Dukes on Friday, Oct. 15 and a 5-3 win over the Toronto Patriots in Toronto on Saturday, Oct. 16.
The Trenton squad will attempt to keep its unbeaten string intact with a road game against the Caledon Admirals (0-6, last in South Division) on Thursday, Oct. 21. The Golden Hawks return to home ice to play the Mississauga Chargers (1-6, fifth in South Division) on Friday, Oct. 22 at the Duncan McDonald Memorial Gardens at 7:30 p.m.
While the upcoming games are against the lesser lights of the OJHL’s South Division, Goulet cautions against his charges being overconfident for the contests as these teams are looking to knock the Golden Hawks off their unbeaten perch.
“It’s junior ‘A’ hockey and all the players here are capable,” he said. “You can’t take a night off. We have to be ready to compete and if we’re not we’re going to be in trouble.”
