The bells will one day ring again in St. Peter’s Anglican Church in downtown Cobourg.
That’s one of the goals of the restoration project that is currently being undertaken by a group of individuals who are dedicated to seeing the historic building preserved.
The church as it exists today was built in 1856, and designed by Kivas Tully, who was famous for designing churches of the time as well as many buildings in Queen’s Park.
Peter Delanty, former mayor of Cobourg, said it’s vital that this important piece of history be preserved.
Delanty said there are 10 carillon bells in the steeple that haven’t been operation since 2021. They are one item on the list to be repaired, along with structural repairs to the steeple itself and constructing a new roof while preserving the old plaster on the existing roof.
Delanty said many important people in Canadian history attended the church.
He said while there have been some significant donations made toward the project, there’s still a lot of money that needs to be raised.
A fundraiser dinner is being held at the Cobourg Yacht Club on August 25, called the Heritage Dinner on the Docks, to help cover some of the costs of the repairs.
If you’d like to make a donation to the project, you can visit the Canada Helps page to donate there.
