With the announcement of Bill 23 last week, we reached out to some local mayors about their thoughts on the bill.
The “More Homes Built Faster Act” will see some changes being made to municipalities role in housing development, including the removal of the need for local conservation authorities’ approval for certain constructions.
Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland was tight lipped on the subject, saying he’ll mainly be referring to recommendations from staff early on in his tenure as mayor.
While he wouldn’t comment on anything inside the bill itself, he did say that the timing of it wasn’t the best given brand-new councils were just being sworn in across the province.
Cleveland said he will rely on town staff and other members of council when it comes to how to react to legislation from the province like Bill 23.
As it’s still early days for Cleveland and the new council, he said they’ll be working off of the previous council’s mandate when it comes to issues like housing for the time being.
We also spoke to Brian Ostrander about Bill 23, which will have a big impact on how housing is legislated across the province.
