In honour of International Women’s Day, we spoke with Deputy Mayor of Cobourg Nicole Beatty.
Beatty has served on council for 5 years now, and is currently in her first term as Deputy Mayor.
We sat down with her and asked about her thoughts on the day, mentorship to and from women, and the importance of seeing women in prominant positions in their community.
She told us the day has two meanings to her.
Beatty said the day is important to recognize the work being done by women all around us.
She said it’s a day to remember all the important women in our community.
While on the campaign trail, Beatty said she saw the importance of women in politics first hand.
When asked what advice she would give to young women who may want to be in her position some day, Beatty said it’s important to keep your voice.
International Women’s Day is a global holiday celebrated every year on March 8, and it brings attention to some of the issues women face such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
