It’s hard to imagine a tradition so old that we don’t really know when or where it began but that is exactly the case of the snowman.
For years, children and adults have been packing snow, rolling it into large mounds and then stacking them to form bodies like their own, adding hats, coats, sticks, and food to create a lifelike person in snow.
Ricardo Melendro of Royal LePage Pro Alliance Realty and Brokerage sponsored the 2nd Annual Snowman Building Competition in Brighton after coming up with the idea in the 2022 winter months of the pandemic.
“Getting outdoors, being active and having fun with family is what inspired this idea,” said Melendro.
His team of judges awarded the following entries in the following categories:
– Most Snowman:
o Brittany Levesque and her daycare team entry
– Most Traditional Snowman:
o Brooklyn Kenney
– Most Creative Snowman:
o Karen McAllister and family, shark entry
– Best animal:
o Jennelle Sleeman Payne and family, a dinosaur entry
– Best junior:
o Shaambhavi Parihar
– Honourable mention:
o K9 Fit
With 30 entries to select from this year, Melendro and his team of judges were so delighted with the use of colour this year too.
“We saw something new this year, entries that incorporated colour into the art, so that it stood out against the white, so creative,” added Melendro. To see the winner and all the entries, visit the Brighton Snowman Contest Facebook group at the link – (20+) Brighton snowman contest | Facebook.
