The Municipality of Brighton’s 1973 Tornado Commemorative Committee has an event planned to recognize the 50th anniversary of this weather event that impacted the downtown core of Brighton on July 13, 1973.
Mayor Brian Ostrander described the impact of the Tornado.
The event will be hosted one week before the anniversary, on Saturday, July 8th at the King Edward Community Centre. It will be an all-day event, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and is open to the public at no charge.
The event will feature displays of historical photos of the aftermath, courtesy of the Brighton Digital Archives who has also created a video to commemorate the event.
“This event has been organized by several groups, the Brighton Digital Archive, the DBIA, the Library, Heritage Advisory Committee, Economic Development and Communication team. There will even be refreshments hosted by one of the local Women’s Institutes,” said Mayor Brian Ostrander, chair of commemorative event committee. “It’s what Brighton does, it works together.”
“The Special Events and Civics committee, who organizes the Movies in the Park throughout the summer has organized a film to be played that will have a tornado theme on July 13th,” added Ostrander.
Visit the King Edward Community Centre to learn more about the tornado that uprooted trees and damaged buildings along the downtown core of Brighton and celebrate the fact that thankfully, no one was injured and see how the communities of the Municipality of Brighton came together, neighbours helping neighbours, to clean up after the event.
