Dennis Layton is a I.T. Architect, the father of two grown children, who is hoping to help other parents and grandparents understand the new technological era that has been ushered in by Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). He’ll be hosting a talk called ‘A Gentle Introduction to A.I. for Parents and Grandparents’ at Venture 13 on October 26th.
For those wondering just what A.I. is, you’ve probably been using it now for several years without even realizing it. In it’s simplest form, A.I. is software designed to learn from the data it is provided. Once programmed, it can perform tasks that we usually associate with human minds. A.I. basically simulates human intelligence and because it can read in minutes or hours what a human would take a lifetime to absorb, it can produce results in seconds with faultless detail.
Google translate, Alexa and Siri are examples of everyday interactions you’ve likely already had with artificial intelligence.
If you’ve received recommendations on your social threads, you can thank A.I. for the help. Automated fraud detection and autonomous vehicles are also well down the road to implementation with many years of practical experience behind them.
We asked Dennis what are some of the changes we can anticipate with A.I.?
Storytellers have explored the topic of A.I. in movies like Metropolis (which holds up well for something created back in 1927) to modern day takes like The Matrix, Terminator and even Disney’s Wall-E. We asked Layton, should we be concerned?
Layton told us from his perspective what the current next big thing will be with A.I.
At Layton’s talk on October 26th, the conversation will be geared towards parents and grandparents and how to prepare their children for what’s next. We asked Dennis what can attendees expect to learn?
While the technology now exists and is being used on a daily basis, we still don’t know exactly what A.I.’s place in the future will look like. Layton likens it to the start of the internet.
Layton says that the next few years of A.I. are uncertain in relation to the types of jobs that will become important. He stresses that flexibility will be required to best position our children to embrace the opportunities A.I. will undoubtedly provide.
The upcoming talk has no cost to attend but donations will be welcomed in support of the Northumberland Food Bank.
Note that seating is limited, so to avoid missing out, reserve your seat now.
