In Canada, most horse farms can be found in Ontario, with a total of 252. Here in Northumberland County, Buxton Equestrian calls home. Katie Buxton has been making strides in the equestrian industry both here in Northumberland and for a considerable time in Prince Edward County.
Buxton says she’s been horse-crazy for as long as she remembers.
Surprisingly, the majority of these farms are quite small, with 74.8% of them employing only five or fewer workers. What’s even more astonishing is that not a single horse farm in all of Canada has a staff exceeding 50 people. Buxton began working with boarding horses on her family farm, while working at another location in Prince Edward County to make ends meet.
In the broader context of Canadian equestrianism, some athletes have stood out, competing in prestigious events such as the Olympics and the Pan Am Games. Currently, four Canadians rank among the top 100 horse jumpers in the world. Canada celebrated success in Dressage with a gold medal and in Eventing with a bronze at the 2019 Pan Am Games. Katie plays a vital role in the equine world by ensuring retired horses find loving homes once their careers come to an end.
