Northumberland OPP say they have arrested and charged an individual in connection with an investigation involving a firearm.

“It was reported that an individual at the residence had a firearm,” said police. “As a result of the incident, one individual sustained injuries, and was transported to a hospital.
“The individual is in stable condition,” said OPP, on Monday night.
On Feb. 12, 2024, police said a 28-year-old resident of Northumberland County was charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with the following offences; two counts of careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition – contrary to section 86(1) of the code; unauthorized possession of a firearm – contrary to section 91(1) of the code; possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose – contrary to section 88 of the code; assault – spousal – contrary to section 266 of the code; and mischief – domestic – contrary to section 430(4) of the code.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
OPP did not provide a more specific location than a resident of Northumberland.
The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing, reported police.
Police said the name of the accused will not be released to protect the identity of the victim.
Northumberland OPP’s crime unit is continuing their investigation under the direction of the OPP’s criminal investigation branch, with help from forensic identification services, said police.
Police also noted the province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate with respect to this investigation, and as a result, OPP cannot provide any further information at this time.
Additional inquiries should be directed to the SIU, said police.
Meanwhile, the SIU has said it is investigating after an OPP officer allegedly shot a man.
The SIU issued a release on Saturday, Feb. 10, saying officials were investigating after an OPP officer allegedly shot and injured a 28-year-old man early that morning at a residence in the Colborne area.
According to the SIU, preliminary information suggests at about 1 a.m. police received a domestic violence-related 911 call from a residence in the Highway 401 and County Road 25 area. The man reportedly had a firearm, said SIU.
According to the SIU, preliminary information also suggests that officers arrived on scene and a man allegedly shot at police and an officer allegedly shot the man. The man was taken to hospital for treatment.
SIU has released no additional details. Three investigators and two forensic investigators were assigned to the case, noted the SIU.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or visit https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
The SIU is described online as an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
Findings of SIU investigations are publicly reported.
