Featuring photos of air force veterans and more, 48 commemorative banners now adorn the streets in Quinte West in celebration of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF) 100th anniversary.
Monday, April 1, 2024, marked 100 years of service for the RCAF and in celebration of this milestone, the city said commemorative banners were hung on street poles throughout Quinte West as part of the 413 (Air Force City) Wing Air Force Association of Canada’s 100 Banners for 100 Years project.
The banners feature photos of air force veterans, their trades, and names of banner sponsors, all set on a blue background, explained the city. The banners can be seen on street poles in downtown Trenton and Frankford and “paint the town blue” in tribute to the contributions and legacy of the RCAF over the past century.
“The RCAF has been loyal to innovation, excellence and serving the nation over the past 100 years,” said Jo-Anne Peckham, chair of the 413 (Air Force City) Wing. “The 100 Banners for 100 Years project offers the community an opportunity to reflect on the significance of the RCAF and the sacrifices of those who have served.”
Peckham said 413 (Air Force City) wing is honoured to work with the city and others while recognizing such an important Canadian milestone.
Meanwhile, Quinte West council has also approved that the honour of the “Freedom of the City” be bestowed on members and personnel of RCAF Trenton and its veterans to mark the monumental anniversary. This honour will also be presented as part of an RCAF celebration, parade and flag-raising ceremony set for Sunday, April 7 in Trenton.
The community is being encouraged to take part in the celebrations this weekend.
“The marking of the RCAF 100th anniversary is a significant milestone in Canadian history, and for Quinte West as an Air Force city,” said Mayor Jim Harrison. “I encourage everyone to come out and see the RCAF banners, attend the many anniversary events in Quinte West this year, and continue to support the brave service people who serve our country.”

A little later in the year, the Quinte International Air Show will also return celebrating the 100th anniversary. 8 Wing/CFB Trenton will host the show on June 29 and 30.
