Quinte West residents can get some help with spring cleaning, while also helping divert items from the landfill and finding “new-to-you treasures” with an upcoming curb-side “Giveaway Day.”
The city is calling on residents to give household items a new life during Giveaway Day on Saturday, April 20 from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. During this time, residents can simply place unwanted household items in good condition at the curb for others to take, explained the city.
“Giveaway Day is the perfect opportunity to create eco-friendly habits at home as we kick-start our spring cleaning,” said Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison. “When we reduce, reuse and recycle unwanted items, we not only keep waste out of the landfill, but also contribute to a healthier, greener planet.”
Residents can place their giveaway items at the curb or road in front of their homes and should clearly label them with stickers or signs to indicate they are free, explained the city.
Items that are not part of Giveaway Day should be kept separate. Any uncollected items should be removed from the curb at the end of the day to avoid fines from bylaw enforcement, noted city officials.
According to the city, appropriate items to give away include DVDs, books, furniture, small appliances, kitchen items and construction materials, such as hardware, lumber and drywall.
Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Directorate advises against giving away cribs, car seats, strollers, bath seats and playpens to avoid unsafe use.
Quinte Trash Bash is also scheduled for April 20, providing opportunities to mark Earth Day on April 22 as well.
The rain date for Giveaway Day is Sunday, April 21. To learn more, visit Giveaway Days – The City of Quinte West.
