From ensuring sensible growth, to fiscal responsibility, housing, doctor recruitment, and a truly accessible municipality, these are just a few of the areas that are top of mind for Brighton’s new CAO Elana Arthurs.
Arthurs took over at the helm of the Municipality of Brighton effective April 8, as previous CAO Bob Casselman retired. She brings more than 15 years of official municipal experience to Brighton, having previously held the CAO title in the Township of Douro-Dummer for the last three years.
However, her starting point in municipal politics goes back to when she was young, she explained.
“I got into municipal government in 2009 and really had a passion to move up through the organization and achieve that CAO position,” added Arthurs.
When the CAO opportunity in Brighton popped up, Arthurs started with some initial research – although she already had ties here.
“I had spent some time here some time ago – had taken in Applefest. I have some family that lives here, although it had been some time since I’d really taken a (deeper) look at Brighton,” explained Arthurs.
Ultimately, Arthurs was attracted to the community’s growth, saying she wanted to be a part of the change underway here.
“At this point in my life, my children are grown – I do have a brand-new grandbaby – but other than that, I have the opportunity to devote my time to my career, and I’m really excited to be here,” added Arthurs.
While Arthurs is just settling into her new role and it’s still early days, she acknowledged some key themes emerging already and priorities to keep at the forefront.
In addition to sensible growth, fiscal responsibility, housing, and physician recruitment files, ensuring the municipality – offices and staff – are accessible is top of mind, said Arthurs.
Engagement with the community, and ensuring residents are heard, with decisions made reflective of what residents want to see is also top of mind, continued Arthurs.
“Certainly, council is out there and can provide some of that (resident) feedback to us, but I really would like to ensure that our staff are available and able to be responsive to residents if they have inquiries,” said Arthurs, adding engagement with residents is paramount, especially as Brighton moves forward and grows.
Arthurs encourages citizens with questions and comments to reach out and connect.
As previously reported, Arthurs also holds certified municipal officer (CMO) and accredited Ontario municipal clerk (AOMC) designations and is a recognized leader with the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO), where she’s also completing her final year on the board of directors in the role of immediate past president.
During the announcement of her appointment, Mayor Brian Ostrander described Arthurs as an ideal candidate to lead the municipality forward and help tackle current challenges.
“I am confident that her strategic vision and collaborative approach will be invaluable assets to Brighton,” said Ostrander. “I look forward to working with CAO Arthurs as we navigate the opportunities and challenges facing our community.
“I am certain that under her leadership Brighton will continue to thrive as a vibrant and prosperous place to live and work.”
