Northumberland OPP are warning of a scam that’s resurfaced in the area.
While police continue to investigate a number of frauds and scams circulating, they say one of note has resurfaced in the area. As a result, police have issued a warning to area residents.
“Recently, the public (has) reported being flagged down by individuals appearing to be in distress or requesting money,” said police, adding locations seem to vary from Hwy. 401 ramps to county and municipal roads.
Individuals will approach vehicles and advise them they need cash for gas or other reasons, such as losing their wallet. The scammer will offer jewelry in exchange for cash – some have even gone as far as to lay the jewelry onto seats to pressure motorists, explained police.
“The scam is that the jewelry or gold is fake.”
If people find themselves in this position, they should decline, remove themselves from the situation and contact police, said OPP.
“Remember, if the offer seems too good to be true, it is too good to be true and someone is trying to scam you out of your money.”
