The Town of Cobourg is honoured to welcome the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Musical Ride, a cherished Canadian tradition, to Donegan Park on Saturday, June 22, 2024.
Manager of Culture and Events Jackie Chapman Davis tells us why Donagan Park was selected for the ride.
This celebrated event, dating back to 1876, showcases the exceptional skills of 26 RCMP officers and their horses as they perform complex formations and drills to music. The Musical Ride is a symbol of Canadian heritage and pride, travelling to communities across the country to share its spectacular performance.
We spoke with RCMP Musical Ride Member Constable Tenzin Wangkhang at their training centre in Ottawa who is one of the riders that will be in attendance on Saturday. Constable Wangkhang is a native of Belleville and is looking forward to reconnecting with family when the ride returns to Cobourg this summer. He told us being a member of the ride is something he’s really come to appreciate after having worked on the front lines for nearly a decade.
Chapman Davis says that a lot of organization has gone into the RCMP’s return to Cobourg after 12 years.
The event begins at 3 p.m., with Classic Rock 107.9’s own York Bell Smith taking on the duties of MC and a pre-show featuring the Concert Band of Cobourg and the Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early as parking at Donegan Park is limited. Free parking is available at Cobourg Collegiate Institute, with a short walk to the park.
Chapman Davis tells us after the show, attendees can visit with the riders who’ll be giving out special cards as well.
According to Constable Wangkhang it’s hard not to love these horses.
The event will take place rain or shine, so be sure to come prepared and enjoy this unforgettable display of Canadian tradition.
