For over two decades, June 21 has been dedicated to honouring the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Northumberland County across the nation.
Chosen for its alignment with the summer solstice, this date symbolizes renewal and the enduring connection to nature, resonating deeply with Indigenous traditions.
Established in 1996 by Governor General Roméo LeBlanc, National Indigenous Peoples Day was born out of years of advocacy and support from Indigenous groups. The Assembly of First Nations, the Sacred Assembly, and the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples all played pivotal roles in calling for a day to celebrate Indigenous cultures and achievements.
From coast to coast, communities host events that showcase the vibrant cultural expressions of Indigenous Peoples. These celebrations include traditional music, dance, storytelling, and art, providing a platform for Indigenous voices and stories to be shared and honoured.
