The Kawartha Pine Ridge (KPR) District School Board has approved a substantial operating and capital budget of $519,854,831 for the 2024-2025 school year.
They report that this budget aligns with the Ministry of Education’s requirements and supports the Board’s strategic priorities, including Inspiring Excellence in Learning, Success in Life, and Community.
Trustees expressed significant concerns however, regarding ongoing funding gaps, particularly in special education and transportation. “Our current funding does not reflect the actual, on-the-ground costs of service delivery,” said Chairperson Jaine Klassen Jeninga. The Board plans to address these issues by advocating for a more comprehensive funding model that meets the actual needs of their students and community.
The budget allocates over $75 million to special education and includes a capital budget exceeding $49 million. One of the key capital projects is the new Northglen neighbourhood elementary school in Bowmanville, which aims to accommodate the area’s growing student population and provide a modern learning environment.
In addition to budget approvals, the Board acknowledged the dedicated service of outgoing Student Trustees Albatoul Alshraideh and Jillian Thomas. Their contributions over the past year were highly praised, reflecting the value of student voices in decision-making processes.
Trustees also recognized National Indigenous Peoples Day and the ongoing efforts to integrate Indigenous knowledge and values within the education system. The Board continues to celebrate diversity and inclusivity, as highlighted by a presentation from Duke of Cambridge Public School’s Gender and Sexualities Alliance on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity.
