With summer now in full swing, Northumberland County is embarking on annual road and bridge improvements, investing over $8 million in essential infrastructure projects.
The County oversees almost 500 kilometres of roads and 133 structures, including bridges, culverts, and retaining walls. They say these upgrades are crucial for ensuring safer and more efficient travel for both residents and visitors.
Key projects for 2024 include the rehabilitation of the Burnley Creek Bridge on County Road 25 in Warkworth and the resurfacing of County Road 64 or Prince Edward St. in Brighton. Additionally, the County is implementing extensive road paving, crack sealing, and surface treatments across various routes.
“Road and bridge construction can create temporary disruptions,” states Director of Public Works Denise Marshall. “However, these projects are critical to executing our 10-year capital plan for maintaining and improving our community’s transportation network.”
With Northumberland County’s population projected to surpass 122,000 by 2051, these investments are vital for supporting current needs and future growth. The County urges motorists to exercise caution in construction zones, obey speed limits, and plan for possible detours.
