Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, has issued an urgent warning to all residents regarding certain Silk® and Great Value brand plant-based refrigerated beverages, which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
This follows a recall announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on July 8, 2024. Consumers are advised to check the CFIA’s website for a detailed list of recalled products and to stay updated on any additional recalls as the food safety investigation progresses.
Moore strongly urges Ontarians to inspect their fridges for the recalled products and to discard or return them immediately. Listeria contamination does not alter the smell, taste, or appearance of the beverages, making it crucial to heed the recall warnings. As of now, nine confirmed cases of listeriosis have been linked to these beverages in Ontario, resulting in five hospitalizations.
Listeriosis, a potentially serious illness caused by Listeria, poses significant risks, especially to the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can range from mild flu-like effects to severe conditions like meningitis and blood infections.
“The Ministry of Health is collaborating closely with Local Public Health Agencies, Public Health Ontario, the CFIA, Health Canada, and the Public Health Agency of Canada to manage this recall and protect public health,” Moore stated.
For more information on listeriosis and the recalled products, visit the CFIA website. Stay informed, stay safe, and ensure you do not consume any of the recalled beverages.
