Northumberland County, in partnership with the Municipality of Brighton, is getting started on reconstruction along County Road 64 as of July 22.
The project is described as extensive, and will span three years, but will be completed in phases.
According to the county, this vital infrastructure project will see the renewal of approximately 6.9 kilometres of road, spanning from Elizabeth Street to Stoney Point Road. The project will be conducted in two phases over three years, funded collaboratively by the county and the municipality.
The first phase is expected to last about eight weeks and focuses on the rural section from Harbour Street to Stoney Point Road.
Improvements will include road resurfacing, culvert replacements, the addition of paved shoulders for cycle paths, and an artificial turtle nesting site to protect local wildlife.
Northumberland County Warden and Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander has emphasized the project’s importance.
“The multi-year reconstruction of Prince Edward Street and County Road 64 is a significant investment in our infrastructure that will support economic growth and enhance travel safety.”
The second phase, which is scheduled for 2025-26, will address the urban section of County Road 64, also known as Prince Edward Street.
This phase will involve what is described as extensive underground infrastructure replacements, including sewers and water mains, along with upgraded sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and traffic calming features.
“The successful planning and execution of the County Road 64 reconstruction project is due to the strong collaboration between Northumberland County and the Municipality of Brighton,” said Denise Marshall, the county’s director of public works.
“Our extensive engagement with residents in 2022 and 2023 generated a lot of important feedback that has helped shaped the design and planning of the project to best meet the community’s needs. We are thankful to everyone who participated in these sessions providing thoughtful and important contributions.”
Residents and commuters should anticipate potential traffic delays and are encouraged to stay informed through the county’s construction webpage and local notices.
