A Niagara Falls resident is facing multiple charges after an alleged incident at a Hwy. 401 service centre where a Quinte West officer was assaulted, say police.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, OPP said an officer was conducting traffic enforcement on the highway when a motorcycle was allegedly observed travelling at more than 180 km/h and “moving erratically” in traffic.
The officer located the motorcycle a short time later at a nearby service centre, reported police, in a release on Wednesday.
Police said while attempting to arrest the rider, the officer was allegedly assaulted. The individual continued to resist arrest and a conducted energy weapon was utilized, said police.
The male continued to struggle but was taken into custody with help from a member of the public, added police.
As a result of an investigation, the 33-year-old Niagara Falls resident was charged with: Assault a peace officer, resist a peace officer, dangerous operation of a vehicle, possession of a schedule I substance – cocaine, stunt driving – excessive speed, driving while under suspension, drive a vehicle with no plates, and drive without a proper headlight.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on Friday, July 19, 2024, said police, adding the accused is also the subject of arrest warrants in Toronto.
Police also said a second person was arrested at the scene – a 22-year-old Belleville resident was charged with obstruct a peace officer and omit to assist a peace officer.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 15, said police.
