The launch of Phase 1 of the County Road 64/Prince Edward Street reconstruction project is Aug. 6 on the rural portion. The urban part of the project is still slated for 2025-26.
Road resurfacing and culvert replacement construction work as part of the County Road 64/Prince Edward Street reconstruction project in Brighton is officially underway.
This work – which is anticipated to last about eight weeks starting Tuesday, Aug. 6 – is part of Phase 1 of the reconstruction project, focusing on the rural portion of the multi-year project.
The construction work to start will focus on the stretch between Harbour Street and Stoney Point Road to the Quinte West border.
“Lane restrictions will be in effect (at times) to allow construction crews to safely work,” noted Northumberland County.
This project is a joint effort involving the county and Municipality of Brighton.
Municipal staff are encouraging motorists and cyclists to plan their routes ahead with potential delays in mind for when County Road 64 is reduced to a single lane.
Work on Phase 1 was originally set to start back in July, but there was a minor delay.
The project is described as a comprehensive infrastructure project, which once complete, will renew about 6.9 kilometres of the road from Elizabeth Street to Harbour Street.
However, the project has been split into phases, and in 2024, only work on the rural section is advancing. This work should wrap in September.
In the first part of the project, the focus will be on road resurfacing, culvert replacement, paving shoulders for cycle paths, and installation of an artificial turtle nesting site, according to county and municipal reports.
The 2025-26 work will focus on the urban section from Elizabeth to Harbour Street.
According to staff, this work is anticipated to include possible upgraded sidewalks, paved cycling lanes/multi-use paths, traffic calming measures, intersection upgrades, rehabilitation/replacement of sewers and water mains, and grading improvements.
Project updates will also be posted online.
