Ontario is making a significant shift in alcohol sales, allowing over 4,000 convenience stores to sell beer, cider, wine, and ready-to-drink beverages as of today.
This expansion, the largest since the end of prohibition, is a key component of the government’s plan to offer more consumer choice and support local beverage producers. Premier Doug Ford celebrated the move, stating, “Today’s expansion delivers on our government’s promise to give people in Ontario the same choice and convenience enjoyed by people throughout the rest of Canada.”
The phased plan, which began earlier this year, is set to include every eligible convenience, grocery, and big-box store by October 2024. In addition to increasing consumer choice, the government is also permanently allowing the transfer of wine and spirits between licensed locations, making it easier for bars and restaurants to manage inventory. The move supports Ontario’s domestic alcohol industry while maintaining policies for responsible sales.
Peter Bethlenfalvy, Ontario’s Minister of Finance, emphasized that this new marketplace will strengthen both the alcohol industry and local retailers. With continued collaboration between the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) and industry partners, the province is set to revolutionize alcohol retailing.
Below is a list of the convenience and grocery stores in Northumberland County that are licensed, according to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) website, to sell alcohol products as of September 5, 2024.
