The Town of Cobourg will lower flags at all municipal buildings today (September 8) to honour Firefighters’ National Memorial Day.
This day, recognized annually on the second Sunday of September, pays tribute to firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Among those being honoured this year is Cobourg’s own Donald Medhurst.
Medhurst, a proud member of the Cobourg Fire Department for 30 years, served as a Platoon Chief before his death in 2020 due to a work-related illness. His legacy will be commemorated as his name is added to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial Wall in Ottawa and the International Association of Fire Fighters Memorial Wall in Colorado Springs, Colorado later this month.
Medhurst was also honoured last fall when his name was added to the Ontario Firefighters Memorial Wall in Toronto.
In addition to Cobourg, flags at federal buildings across Canada will also be lowered on this day. Flags will return to full-staff on Monday, September 9, marking the end of the tribute to fallen firefighters.
