The Belleville-Kingston Walk & Roll for Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC) took place at Zwicks Centennial Park on Sunday, September 8, 2024, raising an impressive $16,533.04-exceeding its original goal of $15,000.
Over 70 participants, along with local businesses and volunteers, joined forces to support MDC, which funds essential equipment, research, and services for those living with neuromuscular disorders.
The walk was launched by Belleville Fire Fighters, who enthusiastically “sounded the alarm” to start the event, despite challenging weather. Attendees also had the chance to learn about Boccia, an inclusive sport introduced by the Quinte Boccia Club.
This year’s event was especially significant as Canada celebrated a historic achievement-Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is now part of the newborn screening panel nationwide. Early screening allows for timely diagnosis and treatment, improving outcomes for babies affected by this previously fatal genetic disorder.
Businesses like Sweet Escapes, Starbucks, and Top Notch Tint provided generous door prizes, while lunch was sponsored by Eugene’s Septic Services and Prime Windows and Doors.
Donations continue to be accepted online at muscle.ca/walkandroll, with tax receipts available for contributions over $20.
