The government of Ontario say’s they’re ramping its efforts to protect residents during the upcoming respiratory illness season.
Starting in early October, flu shots will be offered to the most vulnerable, including residents and staff in long-term care homes and hospitals. The general public can receive free flu shots beginning on October 28, 2024, at participating pharmacies, doctor’s offices, and public health units. The Ministry of Health has confirmed that flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be safely administered together, allowing for convenient protection.
The province also expects to receive updated COVID-19 vaccine shipments by early October, following federal approval. Initial doses will be prioritized for higher-risk populations. Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, urges residents to stay current with their vaccinations, particularly in light of rising cases of whooping cough, which has seen a notable increase in children aged 10-18.
In addition to flu and COVID-19 vaccines, Ontario is expanding its respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) immunization program. High-risk children, infants, and retirement home residents will now be eligible for RSV protection. The province continues to encourage residents to visit their health care providers to ensure their vaccinations are up to date.
