According to Transition House, Northumberland’s essential shelter provider, operations at the Chapel Street location will be at a reduced capacity of 10 beds following the approval of a revised fire safety plan by the Cobourg Fire Department.
The shelter’s capacity has been temporarily reduced from 22 to 10 beds to ensure compliance with fire safety standards as required by its ECE licence.
Executive Director Ike Nwibe shares his reaction to the reduction in capacity.
Nwibe says the reduction, especially as the colder months approach, is challenging for staff and for those in need.
According to Nwibe, Transition House remains committed to maintaining essential services, and they appreciate the community’s support as they navigate this temporary capacity change.
Northumberland county council has approved $40,000 in funding to provide hotel rooms to help meet demand, but Nwibe still has concerns.
Nwibe says the shelter is continuing to work closely with Northumberland County to provide alternative accommodations for displaced clients and they remain in communication with Cobourg By-law staff regarding potential temporary capacity expansion.
Preparations for a new shelter at 310 Division Street continue, which will eventually welcome clients in full capacity.
