Brighton council and residents are mourning the loss of Coun. Byron Faretis, who passed away late Tuesday (Nov. 19) following a courageous battle with cancer, the municipality has confirmed.
Faretis, who moved to Brighton after a successful career in the food and beverage and graphics industries, quickly became a respected figure in the community. Known for his attention to detail and enthusiastic participation on various committees, colleagues say Faretis worked tirelessly to serve Brighton’s residents.
“Byron was a valued member of the council team,” said Mayor Brian Ostrander. “His dedication to residents was unmatched.
“He was thoughtful and thorough in his approach to decision-making, leaving no stone unturned to ensure Brightonians received nothing but the best.”
Flags at all municipal buildings have been lowered in Faretis’ memory. A book of condolences will be available at the municipal centre from Nov. 21 to Nov. 29.
Before settling in Brighton, Faretis was President of the Wilmot Creek Homeowner’s Association, where his leadership skills first became evident.
“Our thoughts are with his wife Elaine and their family at this difficult time,” added Ostrander.
Details on services will be announced at a later date.
