Northumberland OPP say they’ve laid several criminal charges after recent unrelated speeding incidents on Hwy. 401.
In one incident – on Dec. 18, shortly after 11:30 p.m. – police said they were conducting speed enforcement on Hwy. 401 westbound in the Township of Hamilton, when they allegedly clocked a vehicle at 174 km/h.
Police said they attempted to stop the vehicle; however, it allegedly failed to do so.
Shortly after, OPP received a report of a collision, which had occurred at the next exit.
Officers said they responded and identified the same vehicle that they had previously observed travelling at a high speed.
“The driver and passenger were out of the vehicle, which was on its roof and both occupants were uninjured,” reported police.
Police said the driver – a 17-year-old from Grafton – was arrested and charged with dangerous operation, flight from peace officer, driver motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed, and entire plate not plainly visible.
The accused won’t be named due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, added OPP.
In another alleged incident – on Dec. 21, at about 1:30 a.m. – OPP were reportedly conducting speed enforcement on Hwy. 401 eastbound in Port Hope, when an officer recorded a vehicle at 165 km/h.
The vehicle was stopped, and officers said they observed cannabis in the vehicle.
Police further allege that a search of the vehicle and persons turned up brass knuckles, a folding knife, approximately 60 grams of cannabis and 250 grams of hash. The total street value of the drugs is believed to be about $900, reported police.
The driver and passenger were arrested and transported to a detachment for processing.
As a result of the investigation, police said a 25-year-old from North York was charged with knowledge of unauthorized possession of a weapon, possession of over 30 grams of dried cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place, drive motor vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available, drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed, and two counts of breach of recognizance.
Police said a 32-year-old from Toronto was also charged with knowledge of unauthorized possession of a weapon, two counts of failure to comply with probation order, and possession of over 30 grams of dried cannabis (or equivalent) in a public place.
None of the charges in the above alleged incidents have been proven in court.
