Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) are warning the public about fraudulent phone calls where scammers impersonate law enforcement and financial institutions.
Police say fraudsters are spoofing official phone numbers to trick victims into believing their bank accounts are compromised. Victims are pressured to provide personal information, transfer funds, or assist in a fake investigation.
Scammers often use realistic-looking emails and caller ID spoofing to appear legitimate. The OPP reminds the public that police will never request cryptocurrency, remote computer access, or fund transfers for security purposes.
To protect yourself, police recommend verifying any suspicious calls by contacting your bank directly using a trusted phone number, avoiding links in unsolicited messages, and never sharing authentication codes.
Anyone who has been targeted by fraud should contact their local police, OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
