According to US President Donald Trump, as of tomorrow (February 1, 2025), there are going to be tariffs on Canadian goods entering the US, and that can have a big impact on small businesses in Ontario.
Julie Kwiecinski, Canadian Federation of Independent Business’ Ontario director of provincial affairs, says if the government really wants to put businesses in the best situations to succeed during this time – cut the red tape, which she says cost small businesses an estimated $20.4 billion last year alone.
She said eliminating internal trade barriers within Canada would make a big impact as well, as it’s calculated that it would be about the equivalent of cutting a 21 percent tariff.
Kwiecinski says it’s time that Canada looks what they can internally to help small businesses.
She says eliminating internal trade barriers and cutting red tape would save small businesses billions of dollars and put them in a good position to succeed during these difficult times.
She said figures show that eliminating internal trade barriers in Canada would be huge, as it’s estimated that “red tape” cost businesses over $20 billion last year alone.
