As Ontario Snowmobile Safety Week begins, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) are reminding riders in Northumberland County to take every precaution for a safe and enjoyable season.
Over the past decade, 145 snowmobilers have lost their lives in OPP-patrolled areas, with speed, alcohol, and frozen waterways being the leading causes of fatal crashes. Nearly 40% of snowmobile deaths occurred on frozen lakes and rivers, where ice conditions can be unpredictable and dangerous.
Thanks to local OFSC snowmobile clubs, riders have access to a vast network of well-maintained trails in Northumberland County. Before heading out, snowmobilers should check the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide for up-to-date trail conditions. Trails marked red are closed and unsafe for riding.
Ontario Snowmobile Safety Week runs from February 10 to 17, 2025, serving as a reminder to stay off frozen waterways, follow speed limits, wear helmets, and never ride under the influence. By making risk-free choices, riders can enjoy the season safely while protecting themselves and others on the trails.
