Northumberland OPP says Hwy. 401 westbound has reopened at Gully Road in the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand after a collision involving a tractor-trailer and fire truck.
All resources had cleared the area just after 10 a.m. However, police are continuing to urge people to stay off the roads.
“Please avoid non-essential travel, and if you need to travel, slow down and drive according to the conditions,” said OPP.
A heavy tow cleared the tractor just before 10 a.m.; however, crews still needed time to clear the roads.
As previously reported Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025, according to initial OPP reports, a fire truck was also in the area earlier Sunday morning for a separate collision and sustained damage as a result of the crash involving the tractor-trailer.
No first-responders were injured, but the tractor-trailer driver was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said OPP.
OPP said investigation updates will be provided when available.
Meanwhile, a winter storm warning remains in effect for the region.
Environment Canada has been calling for snowfall accumulations of 20 to 30 centimetres, with peak snowfall rates of three to six cm per hour Sunday.
The heaviest snow is expected to continue this morning and afternoon.
“Conditions will rapidly deteriorate this morning as a more significant area of snow and blowing snow arrives. Travel will be hazardous and is not recommended,” reads Environment Canada’s alert.
Along with rapidly accumulating snow making travel difficult, visibility is expected to be reduced to near zero at times.
