Cobourg Police Constable Josalyn Hilts and Port Hope Police Constable Tammy Staples show how its done.
The 2025 Polar Plunge is making a splash with Cobourg and Port Hope police services, supported by local fire services, paramedics, municipal staff, community partners, local councillors and residents to raise $20,000 for Special Olympics Ontario as part of the province-wide $1 million goal.
The event, set for Sunday, March 9, challenges participants to brave icy waters to support 23,000 Special Olympics athletes across Ontario. Last year, the event raised an impressive $1.03 million, continuing a tradition that began with the first Ontario plunge in 1999.
Cobourg Police Constable Josalyn Hilts tells us they’re hoping everyone will join in.
“This is a fantastic way to support Special Olympics while having some fun,” said Hilts. “Whether you’re plunging or donating, every dollar helps provide training and opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.”
Port Hope Police Constable Tammy Staples tells us they’re hoping for a big turnout.
Participants can register with a standard fee or choose the “fundraise to waive” option, where fundraising a minimum amount covers the registration cost. Once signed up, plungers receive a personal fundraising page to share with friends, family, and colleagues.
According to Hilts, there’s no better reason to be freezin’ this season.
There’s no age limit to participate, but those under 18 require a signed parental waiver.
Plungers are advised to bring a towel, dry clothes, and waterproof shoes-and to recruit a friend to take the plunge with them!
