The Peterborough Petes staged a thrilling comeback on Family Day, overcoming a three-goal deficit to defeat the Kitchener Rangers – but the biggest victory came off the ice.
The team and its fans helped raise more than $17,000 for children receiving treatment at Five Counties Children’s Centre.
CEO Scott Pepin says it was a very remarkable experience.
Pepin adds an event like this is a total team effort.
The Next Gen Game is a unique event that blends hockey with community support, offering young Five Counties clients an unforgettable experience. Several children had the opportunity to step into roles as scouts, coaches, general managers, and play-by-play announcers, even signing one-day contracts with the Petes.
One of the program’s highlights was a specially designed mini-stick featuring artwork by Five Counties client Kelton. Meanwhile, young Nova and her family took centre ice for the ceremonial puck drop, adding to the evening’s excitement.
“The smiles on our kids’ faces lit up the Memorial Centre,” said Pepin. “The Petes are first-rate hosts in creating the Next Gen opportunity, and we heard many good comments and compliments from the kids and their families about their experiences behind the scenes.”
The Petes’ Next Gen Game continues to be a win-win tradition—celebrating the future of hockey while making a difference in the lives of local children.
