This weekend, the 47th edition of Waterfowl Weekend returns to Presqu’ile Provincial Park in Brighton.
Described as a world-class wildlife spectacle, the event shines a light on more than 20 species arriving in Presqu’ile Bay with the return of spring – the birds come to rest and feed before moving north to their nesting areas and often attract thousands of people to the area.
And you’re invited to join in the fun with park staff and volunteers this Saturday, March 15, and Sunday, March 16.
Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher interested in taking in the wide range of waterfowl species, or new to birding and eager to learn more from naturalist-led viewings, the Friends of Presqu’ile Park say with the ducks, geese and swans, there’s lots to experience in the gem that is Presqu’ile.
What’s more, volunteer naturalists will also be set up with telescopes to help visitors get an up-close look at the birds.
Organizers note that numbers can soar to 20,000 birds on some days. Waterfowl weekend runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
The Lighthouse Interpretive Centre will also be open with an array of historical displays, and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions, says the charitable organization, which is dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural heritage of Presqu’ile.
Families can also enjoy duck-themed displays and kid’s activities.
If you can visit the Lighthouse Gift Shop – located inside the centre – this also supports the Friends’ work. There will also be a fundraising barbecue at the Lighthouse from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help the organization.
The organization ultimately works to enhance educational opportunities for park visitors, provide volunteer help for park activities and provide funding for selected educational and environmental projects.
