Northumberland County recently welcomed members of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities (CANHC) to showcase local infrastructure, economic development projects, and community assets.
CANHC represents communities that currently host or may potentially host nuclear technology in Canada. As the country expands its nuclear industry to support climate change goals, CANHC plays a key role in sharing knowledge and best practices.
During their visit, CANHC members toured key sites such as the Ontario Agri-Food Venture Centre in Colborne, Cobourg’s housing developments and industrial parks, and Northumberland County infrastructure projects.
County Councillor Lucas Cleveland, who represents Northumberland County on the CANHC board, guided the tour and emphasized the County’s proactive approach to sustainable growth.
“With nuclear technology playing an increasingly important role in Canada’s clean energy future, it is essential for communities like ours to engage in meaningful discussions about its potential impact,” Cleveland said.
Plans for nuclear development in Wesleyville, within Port Hope’s municipality, are currently underway. Northumberland County’s engagement with CANHC aims to ensure informed discussions and responsible planning as the region explores potential opportunities and challenges tied to nuclear expansion.
