A 42-year-old Belleville man has been arrested after an alleged stabbing incident in the emergency department at the hospital, say police.
According to the Belleville Police Service, police were called to the Quinte Health ED just after noon on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, after reports that a person had started threatening staff with a knife and then stabbed a security guard.
When officers arrived at the hospital, police said the situation had calmed down, and the knife had been removed from the suspect.
The service said police talked with numerous people and learned the accused had attended the ED earlier for an unrelated health issue. The man had been triaged by staff and was waiting on a hallway bed in area designated for non-emergent patients, reported police.
Police said the man allegedly became agitated and started to cause a disturbance, and when approached by hospital staff, the suspect advised he had a knife and threatened to stab staff.
According to police, the suspect then allegedly brandished a knife, and staff disengaged and started creating space.
“Two on-site security officers attended and physically engaged the male attempting to disarm him of the knife,” continued police, adding that while doing so, one guard and the suspect ended up sustaining stab wounds to their legs.
Both individuals were treated at hospital for their injuries.
As a result of the investigation, police said the accused was charged with uttering threats to cause bodily harm and death, assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and intimidation of a health-care professional.
None of these charges have been proven in court.
After receiving medical treatment, the accused was transported to the police station, where he was reportedly held in custody for a bail hearing.
