Environment Canada has upgraded its previously issued special weather statement for the Northumberland and Quinte regions, calling for a “major ice storm this weekend.”
In Environment Canada’s latest freezing rain warning, officials say a prolonged period of freezing rain, with significant ice accretion is coming starting this evening (Friday, March 28, 2025.)
Officials are predicting general ice accretion amounts of 10-to-20 millimetres, with more than 25 mm possible, along with widespread power outages and icy and slippery conditions.
The weather event is supposed to last through to Sunday afternoon.
“The heaviest freezing rain is expected overnight into Saturday morning,” note officials.
However, the area is anticipated to receive “significant freezing rain” throughout the weekend.
Precipitation may start as rain before changing over to freezing rain this evening.
Areas near Lake Ontario may see lesser amounts of ice if temperatures moderate and precipitation falls as rain, add officials.
Officials are reminding residents that ice buildup can cause tree branches to break.
People are being urged to take extra care if out and about walking and when on the road.
Officials also say people should consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.
Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make emergency plans and emergency kits, which include drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
More information and tips for emergency plans and kits is available online.
Area public works crews say they’re continuing to monitor the situation closely.
Meanwhile, some nearby communities like Belleville have declared a significant weather event after reviewing weather reports and in light of the warning.
