Northumberland-Clarke New Democratic Party candidate Ava Becker got her start in politics as co-chair of the Peterborough Youth NDP and is now taking a run at securing the MP’s seat in the 2025 federal election.
Becker is one of seven candidates confirmed for the April 28 election in this riding. As part of MBC’s candidate profiles, we asked Becker to tell us more about who she is and her background.
Here’s what we heard.
We also asked Becker what inspired her to toss her hat into the ring for this election.
Among the issues dominating discussion in this election are tariffs.
Becker said her party is prepared to tackle tariff-related concerns through safeguarding jobs and supporting workers, with investments in Canadian infrastructure and projects and will respond with retaliatory tariffs – and this is in addition to axing GST from certain essentials like home heating to help people through this trying time.
Becker tells us more.
Meanwhile, when asked about the top issues in the riding, Becker also zeroed in on affordability, including under housing, food and healthcare, and seniors care.
If elected, Becker has pledged to start work right away, saying she’d prioritize work to change bureaucratic regulations to speed up building of affordable housing.
