Lower Trent Conservation has extended its flood warning for Rice Lake and the Trent River from Hastings to Trenton, advising that elevated water levels and flows remain a concern.
The update, issued April 25, maintains the warning originally announced on April 4. Although flows have slowly declined over the past week, the Trent River system remains in full spring freshet. With 20 to 30 millimetres of rain forecast over the next five days and temperatures expected to reach 20°C, officials say levels could temporarily rise again before continuing a downward trend.
While no major increases are expected, high water levels are anticipated to persist for at least another week. Parks Canada continues to operate dams along the Trent-Severn Waterway to reduce water levels to summer navigation levels.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas are urged to take precautions. These include ensuring sump pumps are operational and securing boats, docks and other property along the shoreline.
Public safety remains a top concern, with strong currents and cold water creating dangerous conditions. Lower Trent Conservation warns that areas around dams, culverts and bridges should be avoided. Parents and caregivers are reminded to keep children and pets away from all waterways during this time.
The flood warning is in effect until Wednesday, April 30 at noon, unless conditions change. Daily updates and water levels are available at www.LTC.on.ca.
For flood assistance, residents should contact their local municipality. In the event of a flood emergency, call 911.
