A report attributed to Canadian Press says the federal Liberal government has scrapped the previous Harper government’s plan to move the JTF 2 commando unit to a location near CFB Trenton. The plan was put in motion more than a decade ago.
It was national news when the owner of farmland the government wanted for the base, Frank Meyers of Quinte West, tried unsuccessfully to keep the military from expropriating his property. At the time Meyers argued the farmland was precious. It’s reported that right up until his death last fall, Meyers had refused to accept payment from the federal government, for the property the government seized from him.
While there has been no formal statement concerning a decision to cancel the JTF move, it has been reported that the cost of relocating the special forces unit from it current location just southwest of Ottawa, had ballooned to more than $1 billion dollars.
