Artist Des Rodrigues has finished the mural on the west wall of Casey’s Lane in downtown Brighton.
The mural features the Presqu’ile lighthouse, landscape, and an artistic reference to Canada’s former residential schools, during late summer/fall.
Rodrigues says it was tricky to pull off but he’s glad everything came together.
Local business owner and Art on Main committee chair Sheryl Delorme commented, “Our committee wanted to give back to the community. When Des Rodrigues approached us with this idea, we immediately wanted to get behind it and support its completion.”
There was no cost to the municipality, volunteer painters completed the work and Special Effects Lifestyle Boutique and Brighton Home Building Centre donated supplies. The wall space was donated by The Dollar Choice.
Casey’s Lane received attention from the Municipality of Brighton and the Downtown Business Improvement Area in the form of a revitalization project earlier this summer, seeing an installation of “What Has the Pandemic Taught Us,” a children’s artwork project funded by the Brian Todd Memorial Community Fund, new benches and seasonal planters.
This project is intended to enhance the alleyway and provide a link between downtown businesses and nearby shops and services.
The new mural is a definite asset and artist Des Rodriques hopes, “it will be a place of peace and reflection too.”
