Selena Forsyth wears a lot of hats when it comes to volunteer work.
In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find something she hasn’t volunteered for during her time in Northumberland.
Selena moved to Port Hope in 1997, and began volunteering as a way to meet people in the area. She said it wasn’t long before she was making friends and being asked to help out with a variety of different groups.
She said she volunteered on the Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny committee, and it was then she realized the sense of community volunteering can bring.
“That’s how it kind of started,” Selena said. “What I discovered was that you get to meet a lot of people which when you’re new to a community is fabulous, and it also gave me an idea of what the community was like and what it was interested in.”
Eventually she began volunteering with the hospital and Community Care Northumberland, working alongside many other volunteers to see through the creation of a hospice care home that would be come Ed’s House.
She said that since a large portion of the population of Northumberland is elderly, she felt the need to support them as much as she could.
As an extension of that, Selena said she is particularly concerned about accessibility in the area, and is part of the Accessibility Advisory Committee for both Port Hope and Northumberland County.
When asked about her biggest accomplishment in volunteer work, she said seeing Ed’s House come together was kind of a summation of her hard work to improve the lives of seniors in Northumberland.
“It was my dream, and I know I helped in making that dream come true.”
