What started as a routine traffic stop on September 30th in Cobourg came dangerously close to being anything but routine.
Cobourg Police Service Chief Paul VandeGraaf says events escalated after uniformed patrol officers stopped a vehicle on Division Street.
After their initial investigation revealed the vehicle’s passenger, a 17 years old male, had provided false information and was in breach of his release conditions, he fled on foot but was arrested without incident a short distance away.
Seized during the arrest was a full magazine-loaded Glock pistol as well as drugs street-valued at more than $5,000. Chief VandeGraaf says the officers’ actions more than likely prevented a more serious and threatening crime from occurring.
Noting the accused was armed with a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, Chief VandeGraaf said change is needed and it’s need now.
Chief VandeGraaf added reducing the flow of illegal guns into Canada from south of the border will take a concerted effort.
Along with the teen arrested, the driver, Andrew Kanellos, 42, of Trenton, also faces numerous charges.
