In the just over two months since Northumberland Sleeping Cabins Collective was formed they’ve managed to raise enough funds to get the project started.
This past week Cobourg Council approved further discussion around using the vacant Memorial Arena parking lot for a pilot project.
Organizer Jenni Frenke told us the latest news from council.
According to Frenke though, it may be a while before anyone gets to use them.
The six month pilot project will allow the Collective to see if this is something they can duplicate in Port Hope where they’ve also presented to council recently hoping to find an appropriate space.
Frenke anticipates there will be more demand than they can handle, but ultimately the project is an emergency reaction to the lack of affordable housing available in the county.
The collective opted for the cabins as a quick way to get people out of the cold.
Frenke said the outpouring of support has been like magic.
